Continuing Education

There are many opportunities for formal education in interfaith nursing. Here are a few links to resources providing information on related degree programs as well as certificate programs and continuing education courses.

Master or Doctoral Programs

Duke University School of Nursing - Health and Nursing Ministries Program
Duke's Health and Nursing Ministries Program will prepare students to serve as national and international leaders in the development and coordination of congregational and community-based health care programs. The students will enroll in one of three educational paradigms: Master in Church Ministries/Health and Nursing Ministries Track; Master of Science in Nursing/Health and Nursing Ministries Major; or Joint Master in Church Ministries/Master of Science in Nursing. These three joint programs of study may be taken either full-time or part-time. A Post-Masters Certificate Program is also available for the masters prepared nurse seeking further education in the field of congregational-based health ministry.

Edgewood College - Nursing as a Health Ministry
Courses in this program focus on human relationships, program planning and evaluation, and health care policy, as they relate to providing holistic care in faith communities. The program is designed, in combination with the school's religious studies courses, to prepare students for advanced practice roles in health ministry, including parish nursing.

Gardner-Webb University - Graduate School of Nursing, Parish Nursing MSN Program
Gardner-Webb University offers a Master of Science in Nursing Program designed to prepare persons for leadership roles in nursing education, administration, and parish nursing. The Parish Nursing program of study is a 36 semester hour program that can be completed in two years, which is structured to provide students with knowledge from theology, pastoral care, and parish health nursing.

Loyola University - MSN/MDiv Dual Degree
This joint degree in Master of Science in Nursing and Master of Divinity prepares nurses for leadership positions that integrate nursing and ministry. It requires 75 hours of coursework. Loyola also offers a Graduate Certificate in Spiritual Care for Health Care Providers

Queens University of Charlotte - Post-master's Certificate in Health Ministries
Those who already have an MSN and meet admission requirements may take 15 credit hours of specialty courses here for Health Ministries in order to receive a Post-Masters Certificate.

Concordia University Wisconsin - Parish Nursing Program
The distance learning program allows registered nurses to complete the course at home and in concert with the pastor and the congregation in which they will be working. Conference schedules are also provided.

The Ecumenical Institute of Theology at St. Mary's Seminary and University
Certificates in Parish Nursing

The basic certificate consists of two courses, Parish Nursing I and II, and is awarded to those who complete the two courses, in one year, for credit or as auditors. The advanced certificate is offered to students who complete four additional courses: Advanced Parish Nursing; Health, Disease, and Spirituality; Medical Ethics;
and one elective in practical theology or spirituality.

The Marquette University Parish Nurse Preparation Institute
This institute will prepare registered nurses to deliver wholistic, primary health care in churches and synagogues. It is offered as an interfaith model, recognizing and incorporating a diversity of belief systems. The target audience is the registered nurse, with several years of experience in any area of nursing. The program consists of two phases: Phase I is an 8-day seminar at Marquette University. Phase II is a 9-monthoptional fellowship offering five seminars and ongoing support services to the nurse.

Shenandoah University Continuing Education - Basic Preparation Course for Parish Nurse Coordinators
The Parish Nurse Center at Shenandoah University provides a Basic Preparation Course for Parish Nurse Coordinators/Managers. The curriculum provided utilizes the Standardized Curriculum endorsed through the International Parish Nurse Resource Center, Advocate Health Care, Park Ridge, IL. 22 contact hours awarded.

Shenandoah University Continuing Education - Interfaith Parish Nurse Educational Program
The Interfaith Parish Nurse Educational Program is divided into two parts, which incorporate multiple approaches to learning. Topics included but not limited to: Introduction to Parish Nursing, Community Nursing Concept, Theology and Healing, Management Skills for Parish Nursing, Spiritual Caregiving, Wellness Approach to Care, Teaching Skills, Ethics and Values Affecting Health, and Parish Nursing and the Law.

Valparaiso University School of Nursing - Parish Nurse Option
To receive recognition by the College of Nursing that the student's graduate studies have included a parish nurse foundation, the student must complete one appropriate 500-level, three-credit theology course required for the Master of Science in Nursing.
